When we started building Recitare, we knew we didn't want to build another “AI Assistant.” The world has enough assistants. What students need is a partner.
We named our AI Max.
Max is high-energy, versatile, and a little bit obsessed with academic mastery. Whether you choose a deep American baritone or a sharp British lilt, you're talking to Max. Sometimes Maxine, always Max.
The “Maxine” Moment
Some of you have noticed that when you select a female voice, she might say: “I'm Maxine, but you can call me Max.” Why?
Because Max isn't a person. It's a mindset.
- It's the “max” effort you put into a final.
- It's the “maximum” focus you need during a 10-minute sprint.
- It's the “max” understanding you get when you snip a diagram and finally see how the pieces fit.
We're not interested in the “Uncanny Valley” of trying to fake a human. We're interested in the “Socratic Bridge”: the space where an AI helps a human conquer their degree.
One Name, Six Voices
Inside Recitare, you don't choose between “James” and “Sarah.” You choose the flavor of Max that fits your study session:
- Max (US): Deep & Steady. The Foundation.
- Max (UK): Sharp & Academic. The Scholar.
- Max (AUS): Bright & Energetic. The Coach.
Each voice comes in two styles, a male and female variant, but the soul stays the same. The Socratic questioning. The encouragement after a tough passage. The gentle nudge when you've been staring at the same paragraph for three minutes.
Why This Matters
Branding an AI as a character, not a feature, changes the relationship. You don't “use” Max. You study with Max. When the sprint timer hits zero and Max says “Great run, 847 words conquered,” it feels different from a generic notification.
It's the difference between a tool and a teammate.
The Technical Soul
Under the hood, Max is powered by Inworld TTS-1.5, a state-of-the-art text-to-speech model. The voice is just the surface. What makes Max Max is the Adaptive Vibe System:
- Hyped mode: during sprint sessions and after quiz victories. Max picks up the energy, celebrates your wins.
- Focused mode: during deep reading. Calm, steady, no distractions.
- Analysis mode: when you snip a diagram or chart. Max shifts into professor mode, breaking down what you're seeing.
The vibe transitions are smooth. No jarring mood shifts. Max eases from hyped to focused the way a good study partner would: naturally.
Whether It's Max or Maxine
We're here to make sure you don't just read.
You master.
